PCMC’s Water Disconnection Warning: A Wake-Up Call for Housing Societies on STP Compliance

Introduction:

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced a significant move to disconnect water supply to 184 housing societies starting June 1, 2025, due to non-functional Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). This decision underscores the pressing need for housing societies to adhere to environmental regulations and ensure sustainable waste management practices.Punekar News+1Urban Acres+1

Understanding the Directive:

According to Punekar News, the PCMC has issued this directive after multiple notices were ignored by the concerned societies. Under the Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations (UDCPR), residential complexes with over 100 units or those consuming more than 20,000 liters of water daily are mandated to operate functional STPs. Out of 456 large housing societies in the city, only 264 have operational STPs, leaving 184 non-compliant.

Challenges Faced by Housing Societies:

Many housing societies cite high maintenance costs, approximately ₹40,000 per month, as a barrier to operating STPs. Additionally, there are concerns about builders not providing fully functional STPs at the time of handover, placing the burden on residents. Dattatray Deshmukh, President of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Co-operative Housing Society Federation, emphasized the need for accountability from builders and proper inspections by the municipal corporation.

Implications of Non-Compliance:

The PCMC's decision to cut water supply is a significant step that highlights the importance of environmental compliance. Non-functional STPs contribute to pollution and strain the already limited water resources, especially during peak summer months when many societies rely on water tankers. This move aims to enforce regulations and promote sustainable practices among housing societies.
