A tragic lift-shaft accident in Kurla East, Mumbai, has raised serious concerns about elevator maintenance and the responsibility of housing society management. Nearly four months after the death of an 11-year-old boy, police have booked three office-bearers of Shamim Tower Kurla Kadam Co-operative Housing Society for alleged negligence.

🏢 1. Tragic Incident at Shamim Tower

The incident occurred on July 6, 2026, at approximately 9:30 pm in Building 2, B Wing, of Shamim Tower, located in Jagriti Nagar, Kurla East. The young boy, Zain Tehsildar, was reportedly playing with other children on the 10th floor when the accident took place.

⚠️ 2. Boy Fell Into the Lift Shaft

According to the FIR, the elevator door allegedly opened suddenly, causing the boy to lose his balance and fall into the lift shaft. He landed on the roof of the elevator cabin, which was positioned on the third floor.

🚑 3. Rescue Efforts Could Not Save His Life

Residents and family members rushed to rescue the child and took him to Sion Hospital. However, doctors declared him dead at approximately 10:40 pm. The incident left the residential community shocked.

🔧 4. Lift Safety Concerns Raised

During the police investigation, an engineer reportedly submitted a technical report stating that the lift was unfit for use. This raised serious questions about the elevator's condition, maintenance and safety standards within the housing society.

⚖️ 5. Allegations Against Society Office-Bearers

The FIR alleges that the society management failed to ensure proper maintenance and timely repairs of the elevator despite its reported unsafe condition. The case highlights the importance of regular inspections and responsible maintenance of common facilities.

👥 6. Three Society Officials Booked

Police booked three office-bearers of the housing society: Chairman Taufiq Asfaq Khan, Secretary Asif Mansur Khan and Treasurer Mola Usen Patel. The case concerns their alleged responsibility for ensuring the safety and maintenance of the building's common facilities.

📋 7. Legal Action Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita

The three officials have been booked under Sections 106(1), 125, 289 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigation highlights the importance of accountability in housing society management.

🛡️ Importance of Lift Maintenance in Housing Societies

This incident serves as a serious reminder that elevator maintenance should never be overlooked. Housing societies must arrange regular technical inspections, address repair requirements promptly, maintain inspection records and ensure that unsafe lifts are not operated.

The safety of residents, especially children and senior citizens, depends on responsible management and proper maintenance of shared infrastructure. A well-maintained lift is not merely a convenience but an essential safety responsibility of every housing society.
