Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has launched a strong crackdown on major property tax defaulters, issuing official attachment notices to recover long-pending dues. The move comes after repeated reminders were allegedly ignored by several high-value property owners across the city.

đź”´ Strict Action Under the Law

The action has been initiated under Section 203 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, empowering the BMC to attach properties of those who fail to clear their dues. Officials have warned that if payments are not made within the stipulated time, the civic body may proceed with seizure of movable assets and eventually auction immovable properties to recover the outstanding amounts.

đź’° Crores in Pending Dues

According to reports, some of the top defaulters owe massive amounts running into crores of rupees. These unpaid taxes significantly impact the corporation’s revenue collection, especially since property tax is one of BMC’s primary income sources. The pending dues have prompted the administration to take a firmer stand against large-scale defaulters.

📢 Multiple Notices Ignored

Before issuing attachment notices, the civic body had sent several reminders and demand notices to the concerned property owners. However, continued non-payment forced authorities to escalate the matter. Officials stated that strict recovery measures are necessary to ensure financial discipline and accountability.

⚖️ Auction Warning Issued

If dues remain unpaid, the next step could involve public auctions of the attached properties. The BMC has made it clear that it will not hesitate to use all legal provisions available to recover public funds. This strong stance serves as a warning to other defaulters across Mumbai.

🏙️ Why Property Tax Matters

Property tax plays a crucial role in funding road repairs, waste management, street lighting, water supply, and public infrastructure across Mumbai. Delayed payments directly affect the city’s development and maintenance projects.

đź’» Pay Online & Avoid Legal Action

The BMC has also urged property owners to clear their dues using the official online payment portal to avoid penalties and legal consequences. Timely payment not only prevents attachment or auction but also contributes to the smooth functioning of Mumbai’s civic services.
